Geoecology Energy Organisation [GEO]

Dr. Sai Bhaskar Reddy Nakka is the Founder and CEO of Geoecology Energy Organisation [GEO], an initiative to mitigate climate change through adaptation. Aged about 38 years, was born in Hyderabad, India, comes from a middle class family with farming background. An ardent campaigner of Open Source technology / Creative Commons and is against patents. He is having about 14 years experience, contributing to environment and development aspects.

Since childhood he was very much inspired by nature and environment. Studied double masters in Applied Geology from Indian Institute of technology, Mumbai and also Geography. For his PhD pursued “Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Studies of the Polluted Water at Patancheru Industrial Area, Medak Dist., A.P., INDIA”. His field area is one the most polluted industrial area in Asia. Qualified the CSIR fellowship to do the PhD. He is also a qualified CDM / Lead Verifier, and a specialist of Information Visualization, ICTs and Participatory Monitoring tools.

Presently, he is leading the Project "Good Stoves and Biochar Communities" around Jangaon, Warangal District, Andhra Pradesh, India. In this project community members would adopt Good Stoves, technology on biochar production from crop residue and other wasted biomass and biochar application for improving fertility of soil and carbon sequestration.

He is into research and development of technologies for adoption by communities to mitigate climate change, environmental and geoecological degradation, etc. One of the important achievements is designing 15 'Good Stoves' by him, which were declared as Open Source Technology and Creative Commons for the common good. The tribal's living in the deep forest, poor, landless and small farmers are the main stakeholders, by using good stoves are contributing to climate change mitigation, improvement in health, biomass conservation, etc. Has has declared one million good stoves mission, i.e., to achieve in partnership with various stakeholders, with in next 5 years. There is a requirement of at least 0.5 billion good stoves in the world. There is a requirement of diverse stove designs, low cost and with high efficiencies for adaptation, which would meet the social, environmental, economic, cultural aspirations of communities living in developing world. He believes that participatory Open Source Technology Development is the means for achieving this goal.

To address the ENVIRONMENTAL, CLIMATE CHANGE, NATURAL AND HUMAN RESOURCES - AGRICULTURE, TERRA PRETA, WATER, ENERGY, SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOODS, DISASTER MITIGATION AND RESPONSE, and INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY aspects founded Geoecology Energy Organisation (GEO). Many renowned National and International people have joined this organization to support the initiatives. The knowledge created on various domains related to the above areas is accessed everyday by at least 500 people, shared through over 200 web-links created. Also providing on-line support to hundreds of people with queries, and doing capacity building to those interested people, organizations and agencies.

Has successfully lead the project “Vulnerability Assessment and enhancing Adaptation to climate change in semi-arid parts of Andhra Pradesh” - A national level project supported by Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) with objects of Policy Advocacy, Improved Delivery Systems and Implementation.

While doing the PhD lead the National Environmental Awareness Campaign Programme in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka States. Also supported 10 major public interest litigation (PIL) cases related to environmental issues, including two PIL cases related to his own PhD field area on drinking water problem of communities and water pollution impacting the livelihoods of the communities living in the basin.

Also worked as additional coordinator for the DFID funded bilateral programme with the government of Andhra Pradesh on “Andhra Pradesh Rural Livelihoods Programme, impacting 2,500 villages directly and the learnings were adopted as policy for the whole state. Poverty reduction strategy, Natural resources Management, Monitoring and evaluation and ICTs for development are the areas of contribution.

He has conducted two major studies on the disaster response and mitigation related to Eathquakes, Cyclones and Floods. Supported social engineering aspect for the sustainability of Lift Irrigation Schemes and livelihoods in Andhra Pradesh State, covering about 1800 schemes and 1200 thousand acres of land.

He has core competencies in Project Management, Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation; Documentation; Policy and Advocacy; Strategic Planning; Capacity Building; Research, Participatory Technology Development, Organisational / Community Development; and Sustainable Livelihoods through diversification and innovative Strategies.

Presently he is focussed on climate change, environment, good stoves, biochar production, water for irrigation and drinking and applications, sustainable livelihoods, energy, vulnerability and adaptation, and development areas
